In early 2005, Caterpillar® Inc. selected four of its largest and most experienced mainline pipeline construction equipment dealers to form a unique Cat® dealership – one whose territory is defined as mainline pipeline projects worldwide. The pipeline fleets of all four partners were contributed to the new dealership along with the pipeline specialist managers and personnel. Together they bring over 250 years of accumulated experience in heavy equipment sales/rentals/service to mainline pipeline construction throughout the world.

As a result, PLM was formed in May 2005 and has since then been able to efficiently accumulate, move and distribute without geographic borders the specialty equipment needed by the pipeline construction industry.

To support the pipeline industry, Caterpillar dedicated a new division – Caterpillar Global Pipeline to supporting the industry and the new dealership.  Together, they are able to offer solutions to the industry’s challenges.   A global equipment fleet, the backing of the Cat Dealer infrastructure around the world for service and parts and the financing flexibility offered through Caterpillar Financial Services are meeting those challenges.

PLM will work with local Cat dealers to ensure available traditional equipment is fully utilized. The PLM product support team works directly with local dealers to coordinate parts supply and equipment service support to the contractor within the local dealer’s territory. Being a one-stop center for purpose built pipeline equipment allows PLM to build a superior fleet dedicated to the industry and available to move to where the work is. Local dealers do not have to gear up specialized inventory that may not be required again in their territory for several years.

When projects are cancelled, PLM fleet can be redeployed to more active regions throughout the world. Economic or political situations do not create as great a risk for the local dealer. PLM is working with the industry and the Caterpillar community pooling the world’s pipeline intelligence in order to correctly forecast equipment needs. Accurate forecasts allow the factory to plan production, provide the industry with a consistent supply of quality equipment and assists local dealers with traditional equipment forecasting and parts and service management.
